Sigmar Gabriel is that person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-who-is-sigmar-gabriel\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is Sigmar Gabriel?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sigmar Gabriel, born in 1959, has been one of the defining figures in German politics for decades. He studied German, political science and sociology at the University of G\u00f6ttingen to become a secondary school teacher, worked as an adult education teacher, and has been politically active since 1976. His career reads like a cross-section of the centers of power in the Federal Republic: Minister-President of Lower Saxony, Federal Minister for the Environment from 2005 to 2009, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs from 2013 to 2017, Vice Chancellor from 2013 to 2018, and finally Federal Foreign Minister. From 2009 to 2017 he led the SPD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today he works as a columnist, consultant and speaker. Since 2019 he has chaired Atlantik-Br\u00fccke, an organization dedicated to nurturing German-American relations. He is an honorary professor at the University of Bonn, was a fellow at Harvard University, and advises the Eurasia Group as an expert on European affairs. This network spanning politics, business and academia explains why he thinks about international developments not in headlines, but in connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What sets him apart on stage is his directness. Europe&#8217;s central power is disoriented, he writes there, and the answers given by Germans will be decisive.
