Many Europeans are asking themselves how the war in Ukraine and the U.S. elections in November 2024 might affect each other. The simple answer is: the tail does not wag the dog. Since the U.S. itself is not a party to the war and – as U.S. President Joe Biden assured his countrymen from the outset – no American soldier will die for Ukraine, the war in faraway Europe is also beyond the perception of most Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once again, domestic issues, especially economic ones, will be more decisive in the election. In foreign policy, China plays a much more important role. Domestic priorities and the reorientation of U.S. foreign policy toward Asia, on the other hand, will have serious implications for Europe and will force its decision-makers to assume greater responsibility for the security of our continent. The rivalry between the great powers of the USA and China is increasingly affecting the prosperity and security of Germany and Europe.
