Christina Figueres – UN Climate expert makes the impossible possible. Maybe even in terms of Donald Trump?

Impossible is not a fact, it’s an attitude, Christina Figueres once said, although at the time, she probably didn’t expect one the largest and most powerful nations to drop out of the Paris Climate Accord. But it has happended and, slightly perplexed, the world is watching a divided nation. She calls Trump’s decision a “nitwitted political drama”. But some US states and cities still want to keep to the rules set by the accord. They believe they can even surpass Barak Obama’s guidelines for the reduction of worldwide greenhouse emissions. But climate expert Christina Figueres feels that, at the time, it’s not possibile to take stock of their efforts, because the Paris climate accord was designed for countries, not for individual states and cities.

But there is hope, says Christina Figueres, born in Costa Rica and raised on politics.

Her father was president of Costa Rica three times. It’s impossible for a country to just drop out of the Paris cliate accord, so she said in an interview. Contracts need to be reviewed; that takes time. But with 35 years experience in politics, she doesn’t believe in a renegotiation.

In 2010, she was appointed Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC. Her hobbyhorse is climate change, but she’s also involved with globalization, politics, biosciences and good leadership.

In July, she has been appointed by Costa Rica’s President Solís for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. A decision on who will be the next UN Secretary General will be made by the end of 2016 by the UN General Assembly following a recommendation by the UN Security Council.

1. Peaceful settlement of disputes and strengthening our crisis response capacity

2. Planting the seeds today to achieve a sustained peace tomorrow

3. Forging an inclusive model of multilateralism: collaborative diplomacy

4. Strengthening the United Nations
