Jana Azizi is a popular presenter who is known from RTL’s ‘Explosiv’, ‘Extra’, ‘Punkt 12’ and ‘Sky Sport News’, among others. With her charming manner, she has presented numerous well-known TV programmes over the years. In doing so, she gained experience in dealing with pressure situations in live programmes, being spontaneous and confident and how to react to unforeseen situations. In addition to appearances on TV, she is also a popular presenter at events, galas and anniversary celebrations. We spoke to Jana Azizi in a short interview about how she prepares for her presentations and what challenges she sees for the future.

How did you decide to become a presenter and what sparked your interest in this profession?
My deep passion for communication and storytelling led me to moderation. From an early age, I was fascinated by the possibility of presenting information in a lively way and addressing an audience. I have always enjoyed giving presentations and sharing knowledge, whether in small groups of friends or within the family.

The biggest challenges included live situations under pressure, especially in the event of technical breakdowns or unexpected incidents. (e.g. an attack in a football stadium), but also reporting, commentating, talks and double moderation.
Through my many years of experience as a TV presenter in daily live broadcasts, however, I have learned to rely on thorough preparation, spontaneity, humour and calm problem solving, which I make transparent to the viewer.
What qualities and skills do you think are the most important to be a successful presenter?
A good presenter should above all be an excellent host: I don’t do my programme for myself, but for the audience. Attentiveness, politeness, empathy and excellent communication skills as well as quick comprehension are essential.
Can you tell us about a particularly memorable or challenging event that you have hosted?
There were many memorable moments, but one particularly challenging moderation was that of an auction together with Oliver Pocher. Despite the challenge posed by Pocher as an unpredictable co-moderator, I was able to get everything off without a hitch thanks to my quick wit.
How do you prepare for a moderation and what strategies do you use to remain flexible during an event?
Preparation includes extensive research into the topics and guests as well as trial runs. I ensure my flexibility through an open attitude and the willingness to adapt the plan if necessary. My spontaneity is my greatest talent. In addition, I always stay in close contact with the production team so that I can react to any eventuality.
What are the most important trends and developments in the field of moderation and event management that you are currently observing?
A key trend is the increasing digitalisation of events, particularly through streaming technologies and interactive platforms. This development requires presenters to be technically adept and to adapt their moderation styles in order to effectively address both online audiences and in-person audiences.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue a career as a presenter?
I recommend gaining as much experience as possible in different media and formats. Networking and continuous training in communication techniques are also crucial. It is also important to remain authentic and develop your own moderation personality.
How do you deal with difficult or unexpected situations during an event?
I stay calm and focused, use my improvisation skills and rely on prepared backup material. Open communication with the team and quickly grasping the situation are crucial in order to react effectively to unforeseen events.
