Artificial intelligence was generally the TOP topic at OMR 2023, with Sascha Lobo already taking up the hype around ChatGPT and new technologies in his keynote. However, he saw the need for Germany not to miss the boat on digital AI transformation. He explained how the currently discussed language models work through AI and even let Olaf Scholz have his say with the help of AI. He compared the current epoch in the development of AI, to the greatness of industrialization. ChatGPT was the iPhone moment for AI, he said. Sascha Lobo is of the opinion that Germany is not investing enough in the technology.

In comparison, while Facebook parent Meta spends 31.6 billion on research, Telekom (which significantly outspends Facebook in revenue) spends just 33 million euros. Amazon spends around 40 billion on research.
It was also interesting to hear that China has already introduced the subject “Artificial Intelligence” in schools in 2018. The curricula in Germany do not map such content.
He also emphasized, “Whether Germany will still be a rich country in 20 years depends on how the AI transformation succeeds.”
