Economic Outlook 2025

29. March 2025 – Oliver Stoldt

The economic outlook for 2025 is characterised by uncertainty. Forecasts for the European economy predict below-average growth. The global economy is expected to grow by around 3.3% compared to the previous year.

The economic outlook for business and politics is characterised by uncertainties and factors caused by the turmoil of war in Ukraine and the Middle East as well as President Donald Trump’s zigzag tariff decisions.

Where is the German economy, the most important player in Europe, heading?

Insolvencies, job losses, car crisis and the ongoing coalition negotiations of the new government. What will a new German government and a US President Trump mean for companies and consumers? Important sectors are struggling with weak demand: in the construction industry, many potential clients are pulling back because the dream of owning their own four walls remains unaffordable due to high financing and material costs. The automotive industry, mechanical engineering and the chemical industry are also suffering from weak demand, which is not being offset by foreign business. This is because supply chain problems are also causing problems on the global markets. In addition, expensive energy and a high level of bureaucracy are weighing on Germany as a business location, as is an infrastructure in need of modernisation.

What is the forecast for the global economy in 2025?

The global economy has shown remarkable resilience: Global growth of 2.8 per cent is forecast for 2025 and 2.9 per cent for 2026. This stability has been underpinned by ongoing disinflation, falling commodity prices and monetary easing in many countries. However, this UN economic forecast is fragile. If trade wars break out between China and the USA and Europe and the USA, resulting in exports being hampered by high tariffs, the data will be revised downwards.
