Heiner Brand: World champion as a player and as a coach, winner & top speaker.

Even in his playing days, Heiner Brand was one of the most renowned and successful personalities in international handball. In his role as coach, the ex-national player took over the German national team in 1996 at a low point and led it, among other things, to winning the European Championship, the Handball World Cup and became World Champion with it in January 2007. At the 2008 European Championships, the team takes 4th place.

Heiner Brand, the likeable face of success, became world champion as national coach of the German men’s national handball team in 2007. Thus, he was the first handball player ever to become world champion both as a player in 1978 and as a coach in 2007.

The business graduate won everything that national and international handball had to offer in terms of titles and trophies as a player from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s with VfL Gummersbach, which was considered the FC Bayern of handball for many years.

As a coach, he became German champion several times with VfL Gummersbach and SG Wallau Massenheim. He became known beyond the handball circles as the national coach of the national team that won the European Championship in 2004.

Heiner Brand was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit with Ribbon, the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Silver Laurel Leaf.

In 2007, he was awarded the “Golden Sports Pyramid” for his life’s work in sports to date, his humanitarian activities and his services to the reputation of German sports in the world. He holds the “Legend of Sport” award and is a member of the “Hall of Fame of German Sport”.
