Interview with Anna Kreuzberg
How did you decide to become a presenter and what sparked your interest in this profession?
I have always enjoyed talking to people and was curious to hear their stories. As a presenter, it’s not about me, but about my customers and interview partners from the world of business, finance or a wide variety of industries. I want to make them shine. I still love getting to know different people and sharing their perspectives. That’s what fascinates me so much about this job.
What were the biggest challenges you faced in your career as a presenter and how did you overcome them?
The live situation on television can’t be compared to anything else. And if something goes wrong, you really grow with your tasks. You can’t press stop on a live programme. And so you learn to make the best of every situation and improvise. The show must go on and the next day it’s back on air.
Welche Eigenschaften und Fähigkeiten halten Sie für die wichtigsten, um eine erfolgreiche Moderatorin zu sein?
Keyword improvisation. That’s the be-all and end-all. I’m a trained actress and have also had the opportunity to learn in Hollywood. In stage acting, you work with what the other person gives you and make the best of it. There’s no right or wrong, just the moment. And that’s where you really learn to improvise.
Can you tell us about a particularly memorable or challenging event that you have hosted?
I was standing in front of almost 10,000 people in the Essen stadium. I had the honour of hosting the Bayao Summer Dance – a festival that felt like a huge party on a merry-go-round! The energy, the chaos, the madness… and me in the middle of it all. But that was exactly the beauty of it – this indescribably great feeling when everything is raging around you and yet you somehow manage to keep an overview. At least most of the time!
How do you prepare for a moderation and what strategies do you use to remain flexible during an event?
The moderation is just the tip of the iceberg of intensive preparation. I’m very strict with myself. You can only move freely and act flexibly on stage if you have done this work thoroughly.
Was sind die wichtigsten Trends und Entwicklungen im Bereich Moderation und Eventmanagement, die Sie derzeit beobachten?
In the event sector, the focus on sustainable aspects is becoming more and more important. Values that are becoming more and more part of everyday social life and that also correspond to me. As I have been the face and creator of my ‘Good News’ programme on Sat.1 breakfast television for years, I am delighted. And of course the environment is even happier.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue a career as a presenter?
Stay authentic – and help the customer to be himself or herself. The audience will notice if you are not yourself. Authenticity is what appeals to people and makes your presentations unmistakable. Be friendly, humorous and open, but always remain yourself.
How do you deal with difficult or unexpected situations during an event?
Good communication is crucial – even behind the scenes. In unexpected situations, I keep in touch with the technical or event management. As a moderator, you have a lot of responsibility. Staying calm when everyone else is excited is important. No airs and graces, no hectic rush. Every unexpected challenge offers you an opportunity to grow as a presenter and to be even better next time, together with the client and the whole team.
