Carina Stöttner is a futurologist. She is concerned with how our world will be shaped in 10 or more years. As co-founder and Managing Director of Themis Foresight, she is fascinated by artificial intelligence, bots, hybrid societies and virtual interactions.
Carina Stöttner sees herself as a generalist and sees this as a clear advantage: as a futurologist, she recognizes the interconnection of different technological innovations and industries. Instead of researching developments in silos, she sees the future as an ecosystem in which each cog can change the overall structure.
We talked to her about her presentation topics, target audiences and, of course, the future.
Carina Stöttner in Interview:
1. What are the core subjects of your keynote speeches?
The core topics of my keynote speeches are future technological developments and innovations, as well as their implications for companies and consumers. What will our world look like in 10 years? How will we live, work, shop or communicate? Which technologies will determine our everyday lives, enrich our research and drive our economy?
In my double degree in sociology in Italy and Germany, I focused mainly on interactions with artificial intelligence and have followed this topic intensively over the last years. What are the social and technological problems that we need to overcome for successful human-digital interactions? What are the ethical and cultural challenges in hybrid societies and work places? What do companies need to consider when AI and humans work together in the future? Where are the challenges of human intricacies for AI and how can these be accurately considered?
2. Which audiance or which branch do you reach with your speech?
Executives of European companies: Retail, manufacturing, mobility, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, energy, financial services and healthcare.
3. Are you a PREMIUM SPEAKER? Where do you get your insights from?
Since 2019, I have regularly exchanged ideas on future topics with executives of German companies in strategy sessions or dinners. In 2020, I launched the podcast Planet Future, in which I discussed various future topics with influential personalities. In 2021, I founded the think tank and foresight company Themis Foresight GmbH together with Jan Berger. We talk to experts around the world about technological innovations and, together with our team of 10, we research for large companies how their industry will develop in the next 10-15 years.
In my double master in Italy and Germany, I intensively studied the topic of culture in artificial intelligence as well as human-digital interaction. My master thesis “How to make friends with bots” was graded “cum laude” and is the basis for articles e.g. at t3n.
My bachelor thesis in the field of media and communication on “Digitales Jenseits – Virtuelle Identität im postmortalen Stadium” was published as an article in the book “Zwischen Leben und Tod” by Springer VS. The book has now been downloaded over 16 thousand times.
4. What will be in the future? Does «time» play an important role in your work?
Above all, the future brings many opportunities if we recognize the possibilities of technological innovations early on and use them for our purposes. My presentations give an outlook of 10-15 years into the future.
5. Tell us your life motto? What do you want to give your listeners to take with them?
Albert Einstein is reported to have said,
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited, but imagination encompasses the whole world.”
This in no way means that old-fashioned knowledge is unimportant. But in order to make real progress – as a society, as a company, as a human being – we must remain curious and not forbid ourselves from thinking the extraordinary, from fantasizing for once. This requires the freedom to act outside of familiar patterns and to formulate the unspeakable. We should therefore allow ourselves to fantasize more often.
