Lothar Matthäus – The Football-Expert

03. September 2023 – Oliver Stoldt

The large Dome convention hall is dark, more than 2,000 participants look spellbound at the screen, the intro film is over and the speaker says: “Give a warm welcome to soccer expert and human being Lothar Matthäus….” – People jump to their feet and pay great respect to Lothar Matthäus with standing ovations and cheers as he enters the hall and walks through the crowd onto the stage. Cell phones are whipped out for snapshots and thunderous applause in the hall, pure goose bumps.

After this frenetic welcome and after the participants have taken their seats again, Lothar Matthäus talks about his life: As a schoolboy and teenager and how he started playing soccer on the football field. His father was a janitor at Puma in Herzogenaurach and his mother was a housewife. He grew up modestly and always had football on his mind. At the age of 17, he received a request from Borussia Mönchengladbach for a trial training session, which he successfully completed. At Borussia, he signed his first professional contract and took off straight away to become captain.

The first invitation from the DFB for the national team was not long in coming and so Lothar Matthäus became one of the most successful footballers in the world. After his start at Borussia Mönchengladbach, his stations were Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and New York. German champion, cup winner, European champion and world champion. He was captain of the DFB team from 1987 to 1994. He also holds the record as a DFB player with 150 international appearances to date. His most significant sporting success is winning the 1990 World Cup with the national team.

During his time with Inter Milan, his individual sporting achievement in soccer culminated in being honored with the 1990 Ballon d’Or as “Europe’s Footballer of the Year” as well as being named the first FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991; in addition, he was declared Footballer of the Year in Germany in 1990.

Lothar Matthäus told very authentically and clearly his story from professional footballer to today’s football expert on television as well as a respected partner of FIFA in questions about international football. Pure enthusiasm, because it was not boring for a minute, the conversation with the two presenters was too varied and the participants in the hall got their money’s worth. There was a lot of laughter when Lothar told anecdotes about FC Bayern. After just under 60 minutes, the conversation was over and as a farewell, there was a standing ovation for an exceptional football expert and great person.
