Interview with Rob Holub:
1. How did you decide to become a presenter and what sparked your interest in this profession?
I have always been a born performer, a showman, and an entertainer. Initially, I dreamed of becoming an actor, but life took me in a different direction. Over 20 years ago, I found my way into the television industry and began my career as a TV reporter and TV producer. The fascination for the role of a host naturally developed over time. It was never the work in front of the camera or on stage that primarily drove me, but the communication with people.
Inspiring enthusiasm, evoking emotions, telling stories, and asking questions – that is my true passion. Nowadays, every stage feels like home to me, whether in front of a camera or at a conference. It’s always about generating a special kind of energy.
2. What were the biggest challenges you faced in your career as a presenter and how did you overcome them?
While I studied media and communication, I had to carve out the career profile of a presenter myself. The biggest challenge initially was that the Swiss market is very small. Particularly in television, there are few providers and consequently limited opportunities. Therefore, I established myself primarily in event hosting. Now, I also receive inquiries at an international level.
3. Which qualities and skills do you consider to be the most important to be a successful moderator?
For me, it is always primarily about entertaining the audience, keeping the energy high, and conveying a good feeling. Apart from the usual skills in rhetoric, storytelling, and public speaking, authenticity and spontaneity are equally important factors in my approach to hosting. Understanding the entire production, including behind the camera and stage, are valuable added values.Additionally, I set myself apart from many hosts in Switzerland by always incorporating an element of ‘entertainment,’ which is largely welcomed as a refreshing addition.
4. How do you prepare for a moderation and what strategies do you use to remain flexible during an event?
One lesson I have learned once and for all: 90% of the success of a moderation lies in the preparation. Therefore, I make sure to clarify all questions with the client in advance and plan rehearsals accordingly. The introduction, or opening speech, is particularly crucial. It must be spot on and sets the tone for the entire event. Flexibility in responding to the unexpected is essential in this job. Additionally, I ensure that my energy and concentration remain at the highest level possible. I have a few proven exercises that help me with this.
5. What are the most important trends and developments in the field of moderation and event management that you are currently observing?
I see a growing openness towards more playful and entertaining forms of presentation, increasingly integrating multimedia elements. At the same time, one must cater to the audience’s ever-shortening attention span. This leads to a preference for shorter formats and a careful consideration of the length and structure of each program segment.
6. What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue a career as a presenter?
Reflect deeply on your motivation first and identify your outstanding talent for this role. Clearly define in which area you want to moderate. Entertainment? Business? Sports? Television? Events? Gather diverse experiences, even on small stages, to gain practical skills. Build a strong network and consider starting your own podcast. Don’t wait for offers to come to you – take proactive steps and seize your stage yourself!
7. How do you deal with difficult or unexpected situations during an event?
I am always searching for solutions and maintain close contact with the audience. Transparent communication is natural for me, even when things don’t go as planned. In such situations, I remain calm and keep things concise. I do not show any uncertainty, neither to the client nor to the audience.
