Peter Knäbel (1966) is a German/Swiss football official and former football player. He has been the sports director of FC Schalke 04 from 2021 until the end of 2023.

As a footballer, he played over 200 games in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga. In 1984 he became European champion with the U-16 football team. In 1988, he won the DFB Cup final with VfL Bochum.

In 2003, he became technical director at FC Basel. From 2009 to 2014, he was technical director of the Swiss Football Association. On 1 October 2014, he took over as director of professional football at Hamburger Sportverein (HSV). His contract was terminated in spring 2016.

He then returned to Switzerland and worked as an advisor to FC Zurich and VfB Stuttgart. In addition, he worked as a TV expert on Swiss television for Champions League matches as well as European and World Cups.

In April 2018, he took on the role of senior director of squad development at FC Schalke 04. He has been FC Schalke 04’s sports director since March 2021 and, following relegation in the summer of 2021, is responsible for the club’s direct return to the top flight in the summer of 2022.
