Former Goalkeeper & National player - Football Expert

Harald Anton “Toni” Schumacher is a former German goalkeeper, current TV football expert and a welcome guest at events and in panel discussions.

Toni Schumacher was born in Düren on 6 March 1954. His career began in 1972 with 1.FC Köln. There he became a national player and world-class goalkeeper. During his time at 1.FC Köln, he won the DFB Cup three times – including the spectacular double in 1978. In 1984 and 1986 Toni was voted “Germany’s Footballer of the Year”. Toni was also exceptionally successful with the German national team: European champion in 1980, runner-up in the World Cup in 1982 and 1986.

In 1987 he left 1.FC Köln. After his time in Cologne, he played for FC Schalke 04 for one season and then moved to Turkey to Fenerbahce Istanbul for three years. He became Turkish champion with Fenerbahce in 1989.

At the supposed end of his active career, Toni Schumacher moved to the Bundesliga again in 1991 and played eight Bundesliga games for FC Bayern Munich. He crowned his subsequent work as goalkeeper coach at Borussia Dortmund with what was actually his last Bundesliga match on 18 May 1996, which brought him his second German championship as a player.

In 1987, Toni published his book “Anpfiff: Enthüllung über den deutschen Fußball” (Whistle: Revelations about German Football) which took him to No. 1 on the Spiegel bestseller list. 300,000 books were sold in Germany, more than 1.5 million worldwide. His teammates thought he was thought he was crazy, as the publication of the book meant that Toni would be suspended from “his” 1.FC Köln, as well as the end of his career with the German national team. Toni just wanted to be honest. Because everything in the book he had already addressed several times before without anything happening.

Toni Schumacher was Vice-President at 1.FC Köln from 2012 to 2019, and in addition to that he was and is a popular TV-expert.
