23. December 2024 – Katharina Schlangenotto

Her name stands for departure, inspiration and courage: from the very first second, Nicola Winter embodies the former fighter pilot, engineer and current reserve astronaut. She is someone who carries the power of determination and a passion for the unexplored.

Her story is not only that of a woman who breaks through boundaries, but also impressive proof of how crises can become opportunities and how clear visions can enable great flights of fancy.

Nicola Winter – The dream of flying and the path to the air force

Born in Munich in 1985, Nicola Winter’s childhood was characterized by a fascination for the sky. Even at a young age, she knew that she wanted to fly high. “I remember lying on my back as a child and watching airplanes. The sky was my playground and I wanted to be a part of it,” she says in an interview.

In 2004, she joined the air force – a move that gave her enthusiasm for flying a professional framework. A career full of milestones followed: She became only the second woman in the history of the Bundeswehr to become a fighter pilot, mastering both the Tornado and the Eurofighter Typhoon.

One of her most impressive anecdotes from this time is about a mission in which she had to decide within seconds whether she would take a risky flight route in order to save a maneuver.“ That moment showed me how important it is to act quickly and keep a clear head,” she later reflects.

But Winter was never just about technical perfection. Her passion for flying was always paired with a deep curiosity about the world, its limits and the potential of the human spirit.

The astronaut: a mission for history

In 2017, Nicola Winter became part of the “Die Astronautin” program, which had set itself the goal of bringing the first German woman into space. Although she later left the project, this time laid the foundation for her future career in space travel. She remembers her first training in weightlessness: “It was like a dream I’d had all my life. Suddenly I was weightless and felt an incredible sense of freedom.”

In 2022, she made history again when she was accepted into ESA’s reserve astronaut group. The news went around the world – a pioneer whose commitment shows how important diversity and new perspectives are in space travel.

Switch to the corporate world and new horizons

After leaving the German Armed Forces in 2018, Winter embarked on a career in management consulting. At McKinsey & Co., she learned how strategic thinking and crisis management work outside the cockpit. At the same time, she worked as a paramedic – a commitment that fostered her ability to keep a cool head even in stressful moments.

One particularly formative moment was when she helped an accident victim during a rescue operation. “In situations like that, it’s all about taking responsibility and making decisions in a matter of seconds that save lives,” she says.

Today, Nicola Winter works in space research, teaches emergency and crisis management and inspires audiences with her presence as a speaker on international stages. Her keynotes are a mixture of captivating anecdotes, inspiring visions and practical tips, which she draws from her experience as a pilot and space visionary.

Empowerment and new leadership approaches

Nicola Winter is not only a role model professionally, but also a strong inspiration in her private life. As the mother of a daughter, she knows how challenging it can be to balance career and family. “Sometimes I wonder how I manage it all,” she says with a smile. “But then I think about my daughter and what I want to pass on to her: that anything is possible if you really want it.”

Her commitment to empowerment and modern leadership approaches makes her a pioneer for a new generation of leaders. With her book “The Sky is No Limit”, published in 2024, she shares her experiences and shows ways in which crisis competence and quick decision-making can be used not only in the workplace, but also in everyday life.

The sky is just the beginning

Nicola Winter has proven that there are no limits – neither in the sky nor in your head. Her life’s journey stands for the power to overcome limits, pursue dreams and keep learning. Whether in the air, on earth or sometime in space – Nicola Winter will continue to inspire people to reach for the stars.
