Bernhard Heusler – Dazzling Ex-President of the FC Basel 1893
When he was elected President of the FC Basel 1893 in 2012, the Swiss newspaper TagesWoche called it the best thing that could possibly happen to the FC Basel. This man, who was known for his integrating personality, abdicated on June 3, 2017. Lasting standing ovations and quiet a few tears marked the last game he chaperoned as president.
“A shining light among Swiss Club Presidents.”
That is what we was called by Swiss politician Beat Jans. And truly, Bernhard Heusler was a stroke of luck for the club. Corporate attorney Heusler managed to turn the FC Basel into a premium brand among Swiss sports and leaves his successor to a modern, steadfast club. Historically, he is also the first Swiss Club-President to ever raise a clubs revenue to over 100 million Franks.
The Chairman of FC Bayern München, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, calls him “a smart man.” In Bernhard Heusler’s own words: “I am used to acting very rationally.” That’s why this brilliant Lawyer was adored and appreciated. Doctor of law with no ambition to argue.
His Mother’s Father, a passionate mountainclimber, shaped his idea of man early on, and as a child he used to dream of driving trains. But then he decided to follow his father’s footsteps after all and studied law; he completed summa cum laude. “In eight out of ten cases, suing is economic nonsense,” he says about his work as a lawyer. He doesn’t see himself as a quarrelsome person at all; but adds, “I do like arguing for others, though.”
He’s been a fan of the FC Basel for as long as he can remember. “At first, my dad would take me to watch the game, and we would stand between the 16th and the middle line, to watch and criticize the referees.” He started playing football himself with the E-Juniors of the SC Binningen and describes his first goal as, “the most wonderful feeling, indescribable. The best goal was the first one.” He is still athletic, loves to ski and run, and has a soft spot for all ball sports.
Competent and level-headed
Bernhard Heussler is an esteemed consultant. Even during his term of office he corroborated different sportsmanship activities, held various directorships and supports a foundation for sick children in Basel.
But it’s also a blessing that he now has time for other things. Without a doubt, he is one of the best speakers in his field; now the 53 year old can pass on all his experience.
