The qualified meteorologist, author, speaker and weather presenter Sven Plöger, born in Bonn in 1967, was already fascinated by the sky, clouds and flying as a child.
This and his love of physics made him want to become a meteorologist at an early age. After studying meteorology in Cologne, he quickly discovered his talent for the media.
Sven Plöger has been broadcasting live on the radio since 1996 – he has been in front of the camera for 25 years, presenting the live weather show “Wetter vor acht” before the Tagesschau, the weather after the Tagesthemen and numerous TV weather shows on ARD’s third channels (including WDR, NDR, SWR and RBB). The studio is located at the HR in Frankfurt am Main.

The experienced media professional also moderates panel discussions and events.
Sven Plöger is a welcome and expert guest on numerous talk shows and major TV shows, where he is involved in the current intense debate on climate change and the energy transition.
His first book on climate change was published in 2009: “Good prospects for tomorrow. How we can use climate change to our advantage” (Westend). In 2010, Sven Plöger receives the “Best Weather Presenter in Germany” award at the Extreme Weather Congress in Bremerhaven.
Don’t be afraid of sustainability – how we can “do better”
In 2011, Sven Plöger publishes an extensively revised new edition of “Gute Aussichten für morgen” with the new subtitle “Wie wir den Klimawandel bewältigen und die Energiewende schaffen können” (Westend), setting new standards – for both the scientific and political debate.
In 2013, together with Frank Böttcher, he wrote the book “Klimafakten” (Westend). A compact guide to one of the most important topics of our time.
In 2015, Sven Plöger and a film team set off on a journey to the places where our weather is created. The result is a highly acclaimed six-part ARD documentary and books to accompany the program with the eponymous title “Where our weather originates”. In 2016, the documentary (directed by Rolf Schlenker, SWR and ARTE) was awarded the “Best Story” prize at the NaturVision Festival in Ludwigshafen. Further episodes of the successful documentary series will be produced in loose succession for ARD until 2020. At the same time, Sven Plöger is filming 12 episodes of the impressive geology documentary “Spuren im Stein” (SWR).
In June 2020, his extremely successful bestseller is published: “Zieht euch warm an, es wird heiß! Understanding climate change and learning from the crisis for the world of tomorrow” (Westend). Also in June 2020, Sven Plöger receives the NatureLife Environmental Award from the environmental foundation NatureLife-International.
All climate, or what? Finally understanding climate change: “Somehow” the weather is different than it used to be…”
In September 2021, Sven Plöger and Christoph Waffenschmidt published the book “Besser machen! Hopeful developments and initiatives for a future worth living” (Adeo). In 2022 – inspired by his extensive research and travels on the occasion of the ARD documentaries “Wie die Alpen unser Wetter machen” and “Wie der Klimawandel die Alpen verändert” – Sven Plöger, together with Rolf Schlenker, once again succeeded in publishing a top bestseller: “Die Alpen und wie sie unser Wetter beeinflussen” (Piper Verlag).
In May 2023, the completely revised and expanded version of the bestseller “Zieht euch warm an, es wird heiß” was published under the new title “Zieht euch warm an, es wird noch heißer! Can we still control climate change?” (Westend).
In September 2023, Sven Plöger will go on location for a new ARD documentary entitled “Wie extrem wird das Wetter, Sven Plöger? – The power of El Niño” (HR, SWR) on a trip to Panama. In June 2024, author Luise Wagner and Sven Plöger receive the “Prince Rainier III Special Prize” for this Panama documentary at the 63rd International Film Festival in Monte Carlo (Monaco), presented personally by Princess Charlène and Prince Albert II.
Sven Plöger has always been fascinated by flying: In his free time – and again and again in his documentaries – he experiences the weather from a completely different perspective: in a glider or by paraglider.
