Olympic & World Champion, Expert in Resilience, Mental Strength & Sustainable Performance

Carlo Janka is one of the most successful Swiss alpine ski racers of his generation.

The native of Graubünden won the giant slalom world title and the downhill bronze medal at the 2009 World Championships in Val d’Isère. One year later, he became Olympic giant slalom champion in Vancouver and won the overall World Cup title. With eleven World Cup victories, he left a lasting mark on Swiss ski racing. His outstanding achievements include winning the legendary Lauberhorn downhill and claiming three World Cup victories in a single weekend in Beaver Creek.

On the slopes, Carlo Janka became known as the «Iceman» because of his exceptional composure. Yet behind that calm exterior were consistent hard work, clear decisions and the ability to remain centred under immense pressure. His career was shaped not only by medals and victories. Back problems, heart problems, injuries and periods when his body could no longer perform at its usual level repeatedly confronted him with new challenges. These experiences left a lasting impression and taught him that success is not defined by winning alone. What matters is how we respond to setbacks, what we learn from them and whether we find the courage to rise again.

Since retiring from elite sport in 2022, Carlo Janka has shared his experience as a speaker and through Janka Coaching. In his talks, he combines personal stories from elite sport with practical insights for professional life and everyday challenges. His core topics include resilience, motivation, achieving goals, focus, confidence, teamwork and navigating change and defeat constructively.

1. Mental Strength in Elite Sports

What does mental strength really mean? Carlo Janka speaks candidly about his rapid rise to fame, his greatest successes, and the difficult phases of his career. He explains why mental strength doesn’t mean always being strong, but rather pressing on despite fear, accepting help, and getting back up after setbacks. In doing so, he combines personal experiences with topics such as the nervous system, recovery, nutrition, gut health, and the conscious management of one’s own energy reserves.

2. Stress Management in the Modern World

Stress isn’t inherently negative. What matters is how we perceive it and how well our bodies recover after being under stress. Carlo Janka explains in an accessible way how physical, emotional, and chemical stress affect our bodies. Drawing on personal experiences from elite sports, he demonstrates how nutrition, exercise, sleep, breathing, and mental focus can help improve one’s stress tolerance and maintain peak performance over the long term.
