Dr. Jan Philipp Burgard is editor-in-chief of the WELT Group (WELT, WELT AM SONNTAG, WELT TV).
He regularly appears on television as the host of the programmes ‘WELT TALK’, “Politikergrillen” and ‘Burgard’, in which he interviews top politicians such as the German Chancellor and business representatives such as Open AI founder Sam Altman. Jan Philipp Burgard is also present at international news events such as the G7 and G20 summits. Jan Philipp Burgard became known nationwide as the ARD’s US correspondent. From 2017 to 2021, he reported from Washington on White House politics for programmes such as Tagesschau and Tagesthemen. He also travelled all over America and met extraordinary people from all walks of life – from homeless people to billionaires, from murderers to presidents. During this time, he wrote his book ‘Mensch, Amerika!’ and the bestseller ‘Ausgeträumt, Amerika?’.
He began his journalistic career at the age of 15 at the Iserlohner Kreisanzeiger, later writing for newspapers and magazines such as WELT, Focus, Die Zeit and Handelsblatt. Burgard studied political science, modern history and public law in Bonn and at the Sorbonne in Paris. He has been awarded the RIAS Media Prize and the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Award for his work.
