Michael Meier began his career in professional soccer after graduating in business administration and subsequently working for a renowned auditing firm as a managing board member at 1. FC Köln in 1981, with whom he won the DFB Cup in 1983.

After moving to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 1987, the club under Meier as head of the soccer department won the 1988 UEFA Cup, its biggest title in the club’s history to date.

On December 01, 1989, Meier joined Borussia Dortmund as an executive board member. During this time, BVB won the Champions League, the World Cup, three German championships and the Supercup three times. Michael Meier was named “Manager of the Year” by Kicker in 1992 and 1993 for his work and, together with Gerd Niebaum, took BVB public in October 2000, the first German soccer club to do so. After his successful time at BVB, Meier returned to 1. FC Köln from 2005 to 2010.
