Born in West Berlin in 1961, Guido Buchwald began his professional career with Stuttgart Kickers in 1979. In 1983, he moved to VfB Stuttgart, where he quickly rose to become one of Germany’s best central defenders. With VfB, he won the German championship twice, won the DFL Super Cup and reached the UEFA Cup final in 1989. His outstanding performance in the 1990 World Cup final remains unforgettable, when he virtually took Diego Maradona out of the game and thus laid the foundation for the title – which earned him the nickname ‘Diego’.
After his active career, he moved to Japan, where he became coach of the Urawa Red Diamonds, winning the championship, Super Cup and Cup.
