Born in Malsch, Baden, in 1974, Jens Nowotny played for all of the DFB’s junior national teams before turning professional with Karlsruher SC in 1992. In 1996, he moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where he matured into a defensive leader. With the Rhinelanders, he finished runner-up in the German championship four times and reached the finals of the UEFA Champions League and the DFB Cup in 2002. Between 1997 and 2006, he played 48 international matches for the German national team and celebrated third place as part of the team at the 2006 World Cup on home soil.

Nowotny played a total of 336 Bundesliga matches and scored eleven goals – an impressive record for a centre-back and sweeper. Today, he contributes his experience as assistant coach of the junior national team, supports young talents and also provides advice off the pitch.
