Generation What?! – When baby boomers, millennials & Gen Z meet
Imagine a team meeting. At the table:
- Klaus (62), baby boomer, who believes that “Slack” is a moral decline.
- Lisa (42), millennial, just back from yoga, laptop open, three projects in parallel.
- Tom (28), Gen Z, hoodie, noise-canceling headphones, speaks fluent emojis.
- And Mia (9), Gen Alpha, who happens to be there because she’s doing her student internship in the Metaverse.
Sounds absurd? Welcome to the generational world of 2025.
Generations from Boomer to Alpha – a brief profile
Baby boomers (1946-1964)*
They have survived the fax machine, witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall and know what a video recorder is. Work is a duty, overtime a badge of honor. When they say “digital”, they usually mean their wristwatch.
Generation X (1965-1980)*
The quiet middle. They have learned to get by – with Walkmans, phone booths and the feeling of always being caught between two stools. Digital transformation? They went along with it. Gritting their teeth. But efficiently.
Generation Y – Millennials (1981-1996)*
The “why generation”. Why work when you can travel? Why get married when you can drink matcha? They love flexibility, purpose and fast Wi-Fi. For them, life is an app – preferably with push notifications.
Generation Z (1997-2010)*
Digital Native Deluxe. Their attention span is shorter than an Insta story. But they are creative, agile and speak fluent TikTok. They demand purpose, diversity, working from home – and the occasional detox week, offline of course.
Generation Alpha (from 2011)*
The future is now. They wipe before they speak. Alexa is their best friend. Once they show up at the office, their first sentence will be: “Why isn’t there a touchscreen here?” Their career goals? CEO of something with AI – preferably before puberty.

When worlds collide – collaboration between generations
Everyday working life can be a real sitcom script:
While Klaus tries to print a PDF (for the third time), Tom explains that printers have “boomer energy”. Lisa gives a PowerPoint presentation on mindfulness in project management, and Mia asks from the Metaverse if she can get an update for her Holo-Glasses.
But that’s where the magic lies!
=> Baby boomers bring experience and serenity.
=> Gen X knows the balance between analog and digital.
=> Millennials provide a breath of fresh air and new perspectives.
=> Gen Z brings speed, tech know-how and creativity.
=> Gen Alpha? They will soon be programming the tools that everyone works with.
This is how generational diversity works:
- Understanding instead of prejudices: Everyone brings something to the table. Klaus too.
- Mentoring 2.0: Why not reverse mentoring? The younger ones explain TikTok, the older ones explain careers.
- Communication at eye level: Whether it’s Slack, Zoom or simply a coffee in the break room – talking helps.
- Flexibility in management and working models: A bit of hybrid for everyone, please.
And now? Talking helps!
